Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol, used to reconstitute lyophilized peptides and keep a multi-dose vial usable after the first puncture. It is the diluent for a clinic vial, not a treatment on its own.
The benzyl alcohol slows bacterial growth after the stopper is entered, which is why it is preferred over plain sterile water when a vial will be drawn from more than once. A 10 ml vial is a common clinic size. It is drawn with a sterile syringe and added to the peptide vial in the volume set by the clinician, so the dose per unit stays consistent.
It is not for intravenous injection by itself, and it is not a substitute for the peptide. Benzyl alcohol is avoided in neonates. Once opened, the vial is dated, refrigerated if the protocol calls for it, and discarded at the end of its beyond-use window.
